Blue Badge – Disabled Parking Permit

The national blue badge scheme provides parking concessions for people with certain disabilities. A blue badge lets you park closer to the shops and services you need to use, whether you’re the driver or the passenger in a car.

The blue badge is for on-street parking only. There are different rules for off-street parking, like council, hospital or supermarket car parks. The blue badge is recognised in all European countries. It allows you the same parking concessions as residents of the country you are visiting.

You will automatically be eligible for a blue badge if you are over two years old and meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Receive the Higher Rate of Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Receive a Personal Independence payment (PIP) for being unable to walk further than 50 metres
  • Registered blind (severely sight impaired)
  • Receive a War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement
  • Has received a lump sum benefit within tariff levels 1-8 of the Armed Forces and Reserve Forces (Compensation) Scheme and has been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability which causes inability to walk or very considerable difficulty in walking

You may also be entitled to a blue badge if you are able to show that you have a permanent and substantial disability which means you are either unable to walk, or have considerable difficulty with walking. Further details about these conditions can be found on the GOV.UK website by clicking here.

Applying for or renewing a blue badge

Blue badges are not automatically renewed, you will be notified a few weeks before your badge is due to run out and told how to reapply.

You can reapply online; the process is exactly the same as making the initial application. You will need to pay a fee of £10 for your new badge and you also need to provide an up to date photograph and any evidence relevant to your application.
